Every 5th of november in britain on guy fawkes day we remember the gunpowder plot of 1605 when guy fawkes and his fellow catholic conspirators attempted to blow up parliament and assassinate james 1 of england guy fawkes day also called bonfire night british observance celebrated on november the 5th commemorating the failure of the gunpowder plot of 1605 the gunpowder plot conspirators led by robert cates were zealous roman catholics enraged at king james 1 refusing to grant greater religious tolerance to catholics the catholic plotters had intended to assassinate protestant king james 1 and his parliament celebrating that the king had survived people lit bonfire around london and months later the observance of 5th o f november act mandated an annal public day of thanksgiving for the plots failure his fellow were then hanged and quartered fawkes was the last to stand on the scaffold.
